Borrowed Steps

We often think of a crossing as something we make alone. But every journey depends on something beyond ourselves.

In this image from the Merzouga desert in Morocco, a man leads a camel across the sand. The camel occupies the foreground, establishing the means of passage, while the man remains the visual centre of the frame.

He leads, but he also depends.

The image became a reflection on the process of learning and becoming part of something larger than ourselves. Building a bridge requires trust. Sometimes we lead the way. Sometimes we rely on something that carries us.

Either way, we are rarely crossing alone.

FUN FACT
The composition deliberately places the camel close to the viewer, allowing the viewer to first notice the person leading it and then come to the realisation of what is being led.
